INDIANAPOLIS – It was an incredibly exciting day of #HLMBB action on Thursday. Green Bay and Oakland earned wins to secure a top-four seed and a home game during the quarterfinals of Motor City Madness. Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis set a new NCAA record for most made 3-pointers in a season by a freshman in a win over IUPUI. In addition, Northern Kentucky pulled into a tie for first-place in the HL standings with a road win as we head into Saturday’s regular-season finale.

GAME RECAPS
Oakland 86, UIC 72
The Golden Grizzlies clinched a home game during the quarterfinals of Motor City Madness on Thursday after earning an 86-72 home win over UIC and improved to 10-7 in HL play. It was just a three-point game at half, but Oakland was able to pull away in the second period, outscoring the Flames 47-36. Brad Brechting continued his strong second half of the League season by scoring a game-high 20 points on 10-for-10 shooting from the free-throw line as five Oakland players finished in double figures. Jaevin Cumberland added 16 points and six assists, while Tray Maddox Jr. hit three triples and finished with 15 points. UIC had four players end the game in double figures led by Godwin Boahen with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting and Tarkus Ferguson with 18 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. The loss drops the Flames to 9-8 heading into their final regular-season game at Detroit Mercy.
Northern Kentucky 65, Milwaukee 55
Northern Kentucky pulled into a tie for first place and remains in the race for the #HLMBB regular season title after defeating Milwaukee, 65-55, on Thursday without the services of senior Drew McDonald. The Panthers held a 34-28 lead after the first half and led by as many as 12 points in the first period. The Norse stormed back after the intermission and won the second half by the score of 37-21. Jalen Tate scored of 11 of his team-high 18 points in the second half on 5-for-5 shooting, while Chris Vogt finished with 16 points, including 12 in the final 20 minutes of play. Vance Johnson was MKE’s leading scoring with 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds and Jake Wright added 10 points. The Norse are now 12-5 during League play with the win and Milwaukee drops to 4-13.
Detroit Mercy 87, IUPUI 85
The Titans improved to 8-9 on the season after picking up a thrilling 87-85 win over IUPUI at home. Antoine Davis made four 3-pointers to set a new NCAA record for most 3-pointers in a season by a freshman, passing Stephen Curry’s record of 122 set during the 2006-07 season. Davis ended the night with 20 points and six assists. Josh McFolley led the Titans with 23 points including a critical 3-pointer down the stretch. IUPUI finished with five players in double figures as the team shot 55 percent from the floor. Camron Justice scored 22 points and Evan Hall added 16 on 8-of-11 shooting. The Jags fall into a tie with Detroit Mercy with the loss and are also 8-9 during the HL season with one game remaining in the regular season.
Green Bay 70, Wright State 67
Green Bay secured a top-four seed and will host a quarterfinal game during Motor City Madness after earning a three-point win over first-place Wright State, 70-67, on Thursday. Neither team shot over 30 percent from long range, but the Phoenix were able to hold on the win after going up by as many as 10 points late in the second half. Sandy Cohen III was Green Bay’s top scorer with 24 points and also grabbed a team-best seven rebounds. ShanQuan Hemphill scored 12 points for Green Bay and Kameron Hankerson added 10. Loudon Love was one rebound shy of a double-double for the Raiders as he collected 21 points and nine rebounds and Bill Wampler registered 18 points. Wright State falls to 12-5 with the loss and is now in a tie for first-place in the HL standings with Northern Kentucky heading into Saturday’s regular-season finale.

MOTOR CITY MADNESS
The 2019 Little Caesars Horizon League Basketball Championships will begin March 5-6 at highest seeds and will culminate with the semifinal and championship games on March 11-12 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. Tickets for the semifinals and championship are on-sale now. Once quarterfinal games conclude on March 5 and 6, fan section information for participating teams will be announced.
