Nike #HLMBB Players of the Week (January 21)
INDIANAPOLIS – Oakland’s Jaevin Cumberland totaled 24 points on six 3-pointers in a rivalry game and moved the Golden Grizzlies into second place in the HL standings to be named Nike® #HLMBB Player of the Week, while Wright State’s Malachi Smith averaged 12.5 points and 6.5 assists to help the Raiders to a 2-0 weekend to earn Nike® #HLMBB Freshman of the Week as the Horizon League announced its men’s basketball weekly honors on Monday.

Jaevin Cumberland | Oakland | RS Junior | Guard | Wilmington, Ohio
Cumberland led all scorers with 24 points and hit six 3-pointers as Oakland defeated Metro Series-rival Detroit Mercy, 79-73, at Calihan Hall on Saturday. Cumberland, who is top-40 in the NCAA in 3-point field goal percentage at over 42 percent, was just one triple shy of matching his career high and has hit six or more treys three times this season. The redshirt-junior guard also totaled two steals, two assists and two rebounds as the Golden Grizzlies improved to 5-2 in #HLMBB play and is now tied for second place with the Titans. Cumberland is averaging 20.6 points per game in HL games and recorded his fourth 20-point performance since entering League play.
#HLMBB Freshman of the Week
Malachi Smith| Wright State | Freshman | Guard | Belleville, Ill.
Smith averaged 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds for the Raiders as they went 2-0 over the weekend to improve their HL record to 4-3, good for a tie for fourth place. He began the week nearly recording a double-double scoring a career-best 17 points and grabbing a season-high nine boards in an 80-74 win at Youngstown State. Smith followed that performance with eight points and four rebounds in the 89-66 victory over Cleveland State. For the week he shot 8-of-16 from the floor and a perfect 8-of-8 from the line, while adding three assists, three steals and a block.
