INDIANAPOLIS – The Horizon League opened play on Friday with UIC earning a thrilling overtime road win in the final seconds on national television against Wright State. In addition, Oakland, Detroit Mercy and Northern Kentucky picked up victories to open #HLMBB play 1-0.

UIC’s Travell Washington hit a 3-pointer in the corner as time expired in overtime to give the Flames a thrilling 75-72 win at Wright State to open Horizon League play in front of a national-television audience on ESPN2. Marcus Ottey scored 23 points for UIC and Tarkus Ferguson collected a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds in the win. The Raiders got 24 points from guard Cole Gentry with four 3-pointers as Mark Hughes and Alan Vest each added 11 points.

Northern Kentucky 92, IUPUI 77
Northern Kentucky made it 9-0 this season at home with a 92-77 against IUPUI in the Horizon League opener on Friday. Drew McDonald registered his seventh double-double of the year with a game-high 24 points and 12 rebounds as five players for the Norse scored in double figures. The Jags were led by Jaylen Minnett with 14 points, while Camron Justice added 12. NKU led 51-30 at halftime as it was the most points scored in a half by the Norse against a Division I opponent this season.

Oakland 89, Cleveland State 77
Oakland opened Horizon League play with a road win at Cleveland State on Friday, 89-77, as Jaevin Cumberland poured in 27 points and Xavier Hill-Mais came up with 21 points and nine boards. CSU’s Tyree Appleby recorded 21 points and six assists, while Jaalam Hill came up with 13 points and nine rebounds. The Golden Grizzlies improve to 5-1 in Horizon League openers with the win.

Detroit Mercy 78, Youngstown State 66
The Titans had five players finish in double figures led by the HL’s leading scoring Antoine Davis with 27 points on seven 3-pointers as Detroit Mercy earned a win in its Horizon League opener on the road at Youngstown State, 78-66, from the Beeghly Center. The Penguins were led by Donel Cathcart with 17 points on 3-of-3 shooting from distance and Garrett Covington added 15. Detroit Mercy snapped a five-game HL road opener losing streak with its last win dating back to the 2012-13 season./p>

The 2019 Little Caesars Horizon League Basketball Championships will begin March 5-6 and will culminate with the semifinal and championship games on March 11-12 at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena.
