Lance Rinker
Drive to Detroit is a series that prepares fans for Motor City Madness. Each article will take fans behind the scenes of a team’s journey or preview what fans can expect when they arrive in Detroit. First up is a preview of The District Detroit, a $1.2 billion live-work-and-play development helping to fuel the city’s redevelopment.
(Dec. 8, 2017) — Detroit has always been a destination for sports and entertainment. In addition to being tabbed the auto capital of the world, Detroit boasts a strong arts and music scene. Motown Records’ Hitsville U.S.A. and the many museums of arts and culture showcase a city that has thrived on the diversity of its community.
Imagine 50 blocks of thriving businesses, parks, restaurants, residential developments, and — as its centerpiece — a state-of-the-art entertainment facility in the heart of downtown. Welcome to The District Detroit.
The District Detroit is one of the largest sports and entertainment developments in the country and is made up of a dynamic mix of sports and entertainment venues, including eight world-class theatres and three multi-use sports venues including the brand new, state-of-the-art Little Caesars Arena — home to Motor City Madness.
This season, the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Pistons began playing their home games at Little Caesars Arena. With the Pistons’ move to downtown Detroit from Auburn Hills, Mich., Detroit represents the highest density of professional sports in a North American city’s downtown core. Sports fans can venture a few blocks in The District Detroit from Little Caesars Arena and find themselves at the doorstep of Comerica Park — home of the Detroit Tigers — and Ford Field, home to the Detroit Lions.
In March, Horizon League basketball fans will converge on The District Detroit and Little Caesars Arena for Motor City Madness, which will be comprised of 18 thrilling tournament games over a five-day span.
