INDIANAPOLIS — The home team defended its home court in each of Tuesday’s Horizon League men’s basketball contests, including Youngstown State, which broke a 50-year-old program scoring record by netting 134 points in a rout of Franciscan. Wright State suffered a six-point overtime loss at Miami (OH), 73-67, while Cleveland State and Green Bay fell on the road to Rutgers and Northern Illinois, respectively.

Record-setting night lifts Penguins to 134-46 win over Franciscan, notches Calhoun's first YSU win

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- Six Youngstown State players scored in double figures as the Penguins netted 134 points in a 134-46 rout of Franciscan, breaking the previous program single-game scoring record of 133 set in 1967. Youngstown State's Michael Akuchie led all scorers with 28 points on 11-of-16 shooting, while fellow freshman Garrett Covington tied the Penguins' single-game steals record with seven. The Penguins, who improve to 1-1 on the year, set single-game records for most points (134), steals (37) and margin of victory (88). Youngstown State also tied the school record for most field-goal attempts with 104 and its 56 field goals made is tied for the second most in a single game. The Penguins' 73 points in the second half are the third-highest total in a half in school history and the most since YSU scoring 74 in the first half against Point Park in 1990. The victory was the first win at Youngstown State for head coach Jerrod Calhoun.

Wright State falls in OT

OXFORD, Ohio -- The Wright State men's basketball team fell in overtime at Miami (Ohio) 73-67 Tuesday night. The Raiders won the boards 45-35 and WSU outscored MU 30-20 in the paint. Wright State shot 42% from the field. The score was tied 10 times with 11 lead changes. The Raiders (0-2) come home to host Murray State Saturday night at 7 pm.

Vikings drop opener in Showcase on the Banks Classic at Rutgers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Stefan Kenic scored 12 points and Kenny Carpenter added 12 as Cleveland State fell at Rutgers, 70-38, in the opening game of the Showcase on the Banks Classic on Tuesday night in the Rutgers Athletic Center. CSU fell to 0-2 this year, while Rutgers improved to 3-0. The Vikings open the 2017-18 home slate on Friday (Nov. 17) with a 7:00 pm contest against Coppin State in the Wolstein Center.

Cold shooting hands Green Bay season-opening loss at Northern Illinois

DEKALB, Ill. -- The 2017-18 season opened on the cold end for the Green Bay men's basketball team, as it finished the game just 17-for-66 (25.8 percent) from the field, dropping its season-opener at Northern Illinois 85-65 on Tuesday night at the NIU Convocation Center. The Phoenix (0-1) came within four points early in the second half, after trailing by 13 at the break to the Huskies (1-0), but the cold shooting came back again midway through the second half as NIU was able to pull away down the stretch.
