INDIANAPOLIS — The 2017-18 men’s basketball season tipped off for six Horizon League teams on Friday night, with the home team winning each contest and the league faring 4-2 overall. Oakland, Northern Kentucky, and UIC — which were slated first, second, and third atop the Horizon League Preseason Poll — each recorded victories, with Oakland besting Fort Wayne, 85-71, Northern Kentucky topping East Tennessee State, 81-63, and UIC defeating North Carolina Central, 65-55. Milwaukee earned an 83-73 victory versus in-state foe Wisconsin-La Crosse, while Detroit Mercy suffered a 111-79 setback at Virginia Tech. Wright State fell on the road to Loyola, 84-80.

Chatman Nets 23 As Titans Drop Season Opener At RV/RV Virginia Tech

(11/10.2018) -- Junior Kameron Chatman had a night to remember in his Titan debut scoring 23 points as the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team fell on the road to RV/RV Virginia Tech, 111-79, on Friday night. It was the season opener for both schools as well as the opening game of the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting the Wounded Warrior Project. Detroit Mercy will return to action on Monday, Nov. 13, as the red, white and blue host UM-Dearborn at 7 p.m., in the second game of a day-night basketball doubleheader. The action starts with the women welcoming Bowling Green at 11 a.m.

Nunn leads Oakland to 85-71 win over Fort Wayne in home opener
(Courtesy of GoldenGrizzlies.com) — ROCHESTER, Mich. -- Kendrick Nunn scored 36 points, shooting 11 of 21 from the field including 5-for-11 from beyond the arc while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out six assists as the Oakland men’s basketball team topped Fort Wayne 85-71 Friday night at the O’rena. The Golden Grizzlies played in front of the largest home opener crowd (3,579) since joining the Horizon League. Oakland will remain in Rochester for its next game, hosting New Orleans Monday Nov 13 at 7 p.m.

@NKUNorseMBB opens season with 81-63 win over ETSU
(Courtesy of NKUNorse.com) — HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. -- In a matchup of two 2017 NCAA Tournament teams, Northern Kentucky emerged with a convincing 81-63 win over ETSU. The Norse start the 2017-18 season with a 1-0 record, while the Bucs fall to 0-1. The Norse will host Wilmington College on Sunday, Nov. 12. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at BB&T Arena.

UIC fends off North Carolina Central, 65-55
(Courtesy of UICFlames.com) — UIC opened the 2017-18 season on Friday night by taking down 2017 NCAA Tournament participant North Carolina Central, 65-55, at the UIC Pavilion. The Flames (1-0) had three players score in double figures, including sophomore Godwin Boahen, who had 15 points on 6-of-9 from the field and 3-of-6 from 3-point range. UIC continues the homestand Monday night against Saint Joseph’s at 8 p.m. ET.

Wright State falls at Loyola, 84-80
(Courtesy of WSURaiders.com) — The Wright State men's basketball team fell at Loyola 84-80 to open the 2017-18 season. The Ramblers led 45-41 at intermission. The teams each scored 39 points in the final 20 minutes as Mark Hughes hit two huge threes to draw the Raiders within two points late.  Four Raiders ended in double-digit scoring, led by Grant Benzinger with 16, Hughes and Everett Winchester with 15 each and Justin Mitchell with 13 points.  Mitchell added eight boards, four assists and five steals. There were nine ties and ten lead changes in the game as LU outrebounded WSU 32-28. The Raiders will play at Miami (OH) Tuesday night at 7 pm.

Milwaukee bests Wisconsin-La Crosse, 83-73
In front of a home crowd of 1,492, Milwaukee went wire-to-wire versus Wisconsin-La Crosse on Friday, scoring 51 first-half points en route to an 83-73, season-opening victory. The Panthers led La Crosse, 51-37, at intermission before La Crosse narrowly outscored them in the second half, 36-32. Five Milwaukee players scored in double figures, including sophomore point guard Bryce Barnes who tied La Crosse's Ben Meinholz with a game-high 19 points. Milwaukee will be back in action on Monday, Nov. 13 as the Panthers visit Iowa State at 8:00 p.m. ET
