INDIANAPOLIS --- Wright State University junior designated player Allison Cox has been named the Horizon League Softball Player of the Week, while University of Illinois at Chicago freshman righthander Ashley Hewett has earned Pitcher-of-the-Week accolades for the week ending April 19, the League office announced Monday (April 20).

Cox batted .571 (8-for-14) with two home runs, seven runs-batted-in and five runs scored for Wright State (26-17, 12-6 Horizon League), which went 5-0 last week, including a three-game sweep of the University of Detroit Mercy. She was 7-for-11 against the Titans, capping the series with a home run, triple and three RBI as part of a 3-for-5 day. Cox began the week with a three-run home run Wednesday in the first game of a doubleheader against the University of Toledo. The weekly honor is Cox's second in the last four weeks and third of her career.

Hewett picked up a pair of complete-game victories as League-leading UIC (18-20, 10-1 Horizon League) extended its winning streak to eight last week with a three-game sweep of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. She allowed only one earned run and five hits while striking out eight Wednesday in a 7-1 victory in the opener. Hewett then came back even stronger Thursday in the series finale, fanning a career-best and team season-high 12 with only five hits and one earned run allowed in a 2-1 win. The award is Hewett's second of the season.

Comprised of 10 public and private institutions of higher learning, the Horizon League is an NCAA Division I athletics conference that sponsors 19 intercollegiate championships and is headquartered in Indianapolis. The League and its member institutions aspire to teach young people, through athletic competition, the value of learning, service to others and personal responsibility.

Horizon League teams have enjoyed national success in a variety of sports in recent years, most notably in men's basketball, in which its teams have advanced to the Regional semi-finals of the NCAA Championship three times in the past seven seasons.
