INDIANAPOLIS -- Valparaiso University baseball player Matt Lenski and women's basketball player Agnieszka Kulaga have been named U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 15, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Thursday (March 19).
Lenski (Milwaukee, Wis./Marquette), a senior, hit safely in all three of Valparaiso's games last week to extend his hitting streak to 10 dating to last season. He went 2-for-5 with a home run, three runs-batted-in and two runs scored in game two of last Friday's doubleheader against Tennessee Tech University after going 2-for-3 in the opener.
In the classroom, Lenski carries a 3.40 grade-point average as a nursing major at Valparaiso. He was named to the Horizon League's 2009 Fall Academic Honor Roll.
Kulaga (Tarnow, Poland/I Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace), a senior, led Valparaiso with 19 points in the Crusaders' loss to Wright State March 11 in the quarterfinals of the Speedway Horizon League Women's Basketball Champioship. She also added three assists, three steals and one rebound against the Raiders.
Kulaga earned a bachelor's degree in international business from Valparaiso in three years with a 3.8 grade-point average and currently is pursuing an MBA. She was named to the 2008-09 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team after being a second-team all-district pick as a junior.
The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of League faculty athletic representatives, from nominations provided by sports information directors.
