The 2015 Horizon League Men's and Women's Golf Championship teed off on Friday afternoon on a beautiful and sunny day at Mission Inn Golf Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.
It's a close race at the top of both leaderboards as Cleveland State has a one-shot lead over Oakland on the men's side, while Oakland is tied with Youngstown State in the women's race.
Oakland teed off with the early group and set the pace for the men's field as the Golden Grizzlies top-three golfers - Jake Kneen, Jacob Johnson and Evans Bowser - combined to shoot one-over-par on the day. Oakland entered the clubhouse with a seven-shot lead on the field, but Cleveland State chipped away at the lead with a strong back-nine, eventually overtaking Oakland to hold a one-shot lead at the end of the round. Mitchell Moore shot an even-par 72 in the first round, while Michael Balcar and Paul Minko both shot one-over-par 73s to lead the Vikings.
Kneen is tied atop the leaderboard with Detroit's Kyle Gaines after the first round. Wrigth State's Ryan Wenzler is tied with Moore in third.
Youngstown State and Oakland were neck-and-neck the entire first round as the duo opened up a 16-shot lead over third-place Cleveland State. Oakland's Morgan Smith and Elle Nichols paced the Golden Grizzlies. Smith has a three-shot lead on the field after firing an opening-round one-under-par 71. Nichols is tied for third with a three-over-par 75. YSU has four players sitting in the top-10 after round one, led by Emily Dixon who is tied with Nichols in third. Allison Mitzel sits alone in eighth, while Aislynn Merling and Emily Rohanna are tied for ninth.
Allyson Hackman of Cleveland State is in second place behind Smith in the women's race.
