INDIANAPOLIS – Thirteen Horizon League teams have been honored by the NCAA for academic excellence. These teams posted multiyear Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport, culminating in the 2014-15 academic year.
Cleveland State and Valparaiso led the way with four squads recognized each, while Green Bay had two. Detroit, Northern Kentucky and Youngstown State rounded out the honorees.
Three Horizon League team champions in the 2014-15 season -- Cleveland State men’s golf, Detroit men’s cross country and Youngstown State women’s golf programs -- were among the 13 recognized teams.
Among specific sports, women’s cross country was the leader with three Horizon League teams being recognized.
New Horizon League member Northern Kentucky, which was a member of the Atlantic Sun in 2014-15, had its women’s basketball team recognized.
Both Cleveland State and Detroit have had at least one team receive the Public Recognition Award all 11 years. CSU’s women’s cross country team is one of 110 teams to earn the Public Recognition Awards every year.
Each year, the NCAA honors selected Division I sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR). This announcement is part of the overall Division I academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance.
Multiyear APRs for all Division I sports teams, including the teams receiving public recognition, will be announced Wednesday, April 20.
