INDIANAPOLIS – Oakland senior Corey Petros and Youngstown State senior Heidi Schlegel have been named the Horizon League’s Scholar-Athletes of the Month for December.
As a business administration major at Oakland, Petros carries a 3.43 grade point average as a member of the men’s basketball team. Petros has received his undergraduate degree and is currently in the Master’s program at the university. In his Master’s level MBA classes this past fall semester, the senior tabbed a 3.53 GPA while being one of three men’s basketball student-athletes currently working on their graduate degrees.
On the court for the Golden Grizzlies, Petros averaged 13.4 points and 8.0 rebounds over seven games during the month including five straight non-conference road contests. In an overtime win at Morehead State, Petros netted 25 points and added 10 rebounds to record a double-double. Over the course of December, the senior averaged 36 minutes on the floor per contest for Oakland.
After her first semester in graduate school as an interdisciplinary communications major, Schlegel earned a 4.0 GPA. The fifth-year senior graduated Magna Cum Laude with a 3.73 GPA in the Spring of 2014 as a middle childhood education major. Schlegel earned academic All-Horizon League honors and tabbed League Scholar-Athlete of the Month twice in the 2013-14 academic year. Schlegel has been a member of the Dean’s list at Youngstown State and Horizon League Honor Roll each semester she’s been eligible.
As a member of the women’s basketball team for the Penguins, Schlegel averaged 14.0 points, 8.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists during the month of December. She netted two 20-point performances in this time against Akron (25) and Robert Morris (22). Facing Robert Morris, Schlegel was 14-for-15 from the charity stripe and went 24-of-26 from the free-throw line the entire month. She helped lead Youngstown State to its first 10-0 start as a Division I program with the victory over Akron capping off this run.
The Oakland men’s basketball team is currently fourth in the conference standings while holding a 5-2 record in the League. The Golden Grizzlies hit the court next on Sunday, February 1 against Youngstown State at 12:30 p.m. ET. The Youngstown State women’s squad is 3-3 in conference play, almost mid-way through the League season. The Penguins host Milwaukee on Saturday, January 31 at 2:00 p.m. ET. Both the men’s and women’s basketball contests will be streamed on ESPN3, respectively.
