Necajevs and Kovaleva honored as Tennis Players of the Week

INDIANAPOLIS - Detroit senior Pjotrs Necajevs and UIC sophomore Mariya Kovaleva have been name Horizon League Tennis Players of the Week for the period of Jan. 18-24.

Necajevs, a native of Riga, Latvia, went 4-0 on the weekend with two wins at No. 1 singles and two more at No. 1 doubles. He posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory against IPFW on Friday and 6-1, 6-4 win at Western Michigan on Saturday. Necajevs also teamed with Chris Cheung to register an 8-3 win over IPFW and paired with Alex Latosinsky in an 8-2 triumph at Western Michigan.

Koyaleva, a native of Almaty, Kazakhstan, recorded a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles on Saturday at Wisconsin. Her efforts helped UIC defeat the Big Ten Badgers, 4-3.

The Detroit men return to action on Friday when they take on Northern Illinois. The UIC women travel to Northern Illinois on Saturday.
