INDIANAPOLIS -- Milwaukee sophomore Alysa Straub (Burr Ridge, Ill.) is the Women’s Tennis Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 30 - Oct. 6.
The Milwaukee women’s tennis team competed at the Warhawk/Panther Invite this past weekend on the Wangerin Tennis Courts at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Panthers competed against student-athletes from Hope Flying Dutch, Wisconsin-Whitewater, Olivet Nazarene, Western Illinois, Green Bay, Cardinal Stritch and Grand Valley State. Milwaukee was successful throughout the two-day event, collecting a 14-2 mark on Friday and went 9-3 in the second day of action.
Straub led the way for the Panthers on the court competing in the top flight of singles. The sophomore began the first day of competition defeating Green Bay’s Stephanie Londre in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-2. In her following match, Straub faced and beat Hope Flying Dutch’s Claire Cooper in the semifinal round, 7-6, 7-4, 6-3. On Sunday, she competed in the Flight 1 championship versus Volvy Boilevin of Cardinal Stritch and won in straight-sets, 6-4, 7-5.
Straub paired up with fellow teammate Christina Colarossi in the Flight 1 doubles competition. The duo began play against Hope Flying Dutch’s Cooper and Kelly Daniel and collected the victory, 8-7 (7-2). For their semifinal match, they defeated a pair from Whitewater, 8-6. In the championship, Straub and Colarossi claimed the title over Olivet Nazarene’s Seraphine Buchmann and Victoria Monakhova, 8-4.
Milwaukee takes the court again on Thursday, October 16th for the ITA Regional Championships in West Lafayette, Ind.
Top Women’s Tennis Players of the Week:
Anna Davydova, Detroit (So.): Won the No. 2 Flight at the Rocket Invite going 2-1 while also winning two doubles matches.
Oana Manole, UIC (So.): Went 2-1 in the Singles C bracket, falling in the championship match in three sets. Won the doubles bracket with teammate Jackie Altansarai with a 3-0 record.
