Just like his team, Phoenix junior Tom Boockmeier (Green Bay, Wis.) was looking up the leaderboard when Tuesday’s round began. Playing alongside first round leader Nick Dennis of Loyola, Boockmeier started on No. 10 made the turn in even par for the day (7 pars, 1 birdie, 1 bogey) and 1-under for the tournament, still two strokes back of Dennis.
Boockmeier birdied No. 1, his tenth hole of the day, after nearly driving the green. Another birdie at the third hole left the junior tied for the lead with six holes to play. Dennis made bogeys at No. 4 and No. 7 to give Boockmeier a two shot edge with two to play. Both players parred the par-3 eighth hole, and after Dennis sank a 15-footer for birdie, Bookmeier connected on a six-footer for par and a 1-stroke victory.
After carding seven birdies and seven pars on Monday, Bookmeier had 14 pars, three birdies and just a lone bogey on Tuesday. With rounds of 71 and 70, he was the lone player in the field with two rounds under par.
