LOUISVILLE – Five Horizon League softball players amongst three different schools were honored by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) for their strong play throughout the season.
Valparaiso’s Sam Stewart earned Second Team honors in the Midwest Region after her stellar senior campaign in which the catcher earned Horizon League Player of the Year honors. Stewart led the conference in many statistical categories including home runs (15), runs batted in (46), slugging percentage (.836) and on base percentage (.568).
Stewart’s teammate Carly Trepanier and Wright State’s Honnah Susor were voted onto the Third Team in the Midwest Region. Trepanier had a batting average of .358 for Valparaiso as the Crusaders’ leadoff hitter. The sophomore totaled 14 extra-base hits on the year, was second on team with 31 runs and led the team with 15 stolen bases. Honnah Susor was tops on the Wright State squad in at-bats (162), batting average (.377), runs (40), extra-base hits (19) walks (26) and stolen bases (22). The junior earned a spot on the Horizon League’s First Team All-league this season.
The Horizon League champion UIC Flames, had two Third Team members of the Great Lakes Region in Elaine Heflin and Lexi Watts. Heflin was the Pitcher of the Year in the Horizon League after leading the conference with 151 strikeouts. The senior was also among the tops in the League with a 1.67 earned run average and limited opposing team’s batters to a .193 batting average. Lexi Watts was first in the Horizon League with a .399 batting average and 28 stolen bases as the Flames' leadoff hitter. The sophomore’s big season landed her on the First Team All-League in the Horizon League.
The award recognizes softball student-athletes across the ten different regions within the NFCA. Member coaches of each NFCA region voted on the teams and each honoree now becomes eligible for the 2017 NFCA Division I All-American teams which will be announced on May 31.
