INDIANAPOLIS -- Cleveland State University tennis player Rob West and Valparaiso University swimmer Shaunna Dangremond have been named U.S. Army Horizon League Scholar-Athletes of the Week for the week ending Feb. 8, League commissioner Jonathan B. LeCrone announced Thursday (Feb. 12).

West (Guernsey, United Kingdom/Millfield School), a senior, won two matches at No. 2 singles and two more at No. 2 doubles as Cleveland State defeated Niagara University and Robert Morris University Saturday. Against Niagara, he picked up an 8-2 victory in doubles and then won 6-2, 6-4 in singles. He came back that evening with an 8-1 win in doubles and a 7-5, 6-2 victory in singles versus RMU.

In the classroom, West carries a 3.73 grade-point average as a psychology major at Cleveland State, where he has twice received CSU's Academic Excellence Award.

Dangremond (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino), a sophomore, won three individual races and was part of two other winning relay teams in a pair of meets last week. She captured the 400 individual medley and was a member of the 200 medley relay Friday versus Cleveland State. In a tri-meet Sunday against Butler University and Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis, Dangremond repeated in the 200 medley relay and also won the 50 and 200 backstrokes.

A finance and Spanish major, Dangremond owns a 3.83 grade-point average at Valparaiso. She was named to the Horizon League's Fall Academic Honor Roll and is a two-time member of Valpo's Dean's List.

The Horizon League instituted the U.S. Army Scholar-Athlete of the Week awards as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution, passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours and perform well during the week's competition.
